Happy International Data Privacy Day!

Stephanie O'Hanley

I didn’t write this message. It comes from Termageddon and I’ve adjusted it slightly, Canadianized it, so to speak, and turned the email message into a blog post. They did an amazing job explaining why it’s important to follow best practices on privacy and data protection so that your website’s policies protect visitors and keep you safe from lawsuits.

Today is International Data Privacy Day (in Canada it’s being marked all week), a day to raise awareness and promote privacy and data protection best practices! Ok, so it may not be up there with the Christmases and Thanksgivings in terms of all-time great holidays, but it’s a day I take seriously as your web designer and want to remind my clients to protect their data and websites!

So, in honour of Data Privacy Day, today would be a great day to:

1. Reset your passwords for common platforms you use

2. Unsubscribe from emails from companies you don’t work with

3. Stop clicking ‘ask again later’ when being asked to set up 2-factor authentication for any websites you log into

Finally, make sure your website policies are up-to-date with current privacy laws. More laws are going into effect than ever before (five new ones have already gone into effect in 2025) and website owners are expected to keep up with it all.. Trust me when I say trying to do this yourself is intimidatingly complicated.

If you don’t have a plan (or attorney) already, I highly recommend considering the tool I use for my own website policies: Termageddon.

Termageddon is the best solution I’ve found for handling a website’s policies (Privacy Policy, Cookie Policy, Terms & Conditions, etc.) They’re great because they:

  • Provide auto-updating website policies (they keep track of new laws and make changes to your policies as needed)
  • Are founded by a privacy attorney
  • Are affordable ($119/year for a full set)

If you’d like to get set up with Termageddon let me know. Either way, I hope this email helps and happy International Data Privacy Day!
